Maurice battle report Cape Bretton Island

The Battle of Cape Bretton Island
9th August 2012

Near the end of Phase 3

The forces of Tysdast were already at sea returning from their diversionary raid against Collisville when Admiral Matthews suggest an impromptu landing on Cape Breton Island, nominally independent from the oppressive Rossrovrian regime it was hoped the army could stretch its legs and pick up some duty free.
The landing forces were joined by the Breton Dragoons who informed Kershaw (Earl of Brent) that the Rossrovrians were occupying the village of Taffs Well which is the main trading town for the island.
The forces drew up as detailed on the map, the Stadtians deployed wide on the right flank with the idea of making a sweeping march to pin the enemy left, unfortunately the orders never made it through as the messanger had to pass several taverns en route.
Phase 1 saw the liberating troops march from behind the wood and form line to screen the cavalry, long range harassing fire from the Ross. Grand battery was taken.

Phase 2 saw the Ty. Cavalry for mass and begin their flank manoeuvre, while this was going on the Ross. Artillery was keeping up a steady fire and advance.

Phase 3 Started with the clash of cavalry, the Stadtians having the better of it and forced the Ross. Units to retire, just as the attackers were preparing a devastating charge the Rochow regiment got out of position and broke the formation, the charge went head with only two of the four regiments, this was enough to break a Ross. Cavalry regiment.  The attacking cavalry re-formed its brigade while the supporting infantry moved up, again the Rossrovrian cavalry fell back, the ill discipline of the Rochow regiment saw it charging off on its own and being swept from the field.  During the fighting Sir Theodore Creasey was captured, while terms were discussed for his return the Rossrovrian cavalry began its retreat to the far side of the grand battery, which was itself still conducting a flanking move of its own.

Phase 4 is where the Ty. Cavalry pulled back having forced the opposing cavalry away from Taffs Well and allowed the infantry to manoeuvre into podition for an assault, a brief firefight with the Irregulars in the wood resulted in the loss of another Ross. Unit.  In a bid to threaten the manoeuvring artillery the Gens d’armes regiment moved from its hidden position behind the wood and lined up for a charge against the rear of the guns, General Broadstock saw the danger and ordered the battle weary cavalry into action again, the battle ended in a statlemate with the three remaining Rossrovrian cavalry facing off the Gens d’armes.  The defenders reserve was now committed against the advancing Ty. Infantry.

Phase 5 concluded the battle, Infantry regiments Itzenplitz and Quadt were destroyed by the weight of fire from the Rossrovrian Grenadiers on one flank and the grand battery on the other, the Prinz von Preussen Cavalry Regiment attacked and captured one battery of guns.
Night fell (well, it was midnight) and the forces drew apart.

Aftermath

Ross scored 3 EP (win and return of Creasey), the 1st Cavalry Regiment was promoted to Guard and was joined by Jamie de Laura

Ty scored 1 EP but enrolled Johnathan Russell – Earle of Bragge who was holidaying on the Island.
The Rochow and Quadt reigiments were reduced to conscript status.
